GOLD BEACH, Ore. - Curry County residents overwhelming voted Tuesday to recall Sheriff Mark Metcalf.

andquot;The people have spoken,andquot; all three Curry County commissioners said to start separate telephone interviews from their homes.

andquot;I guess they wanted him out of office,andquot; Commissioner Georgia Nowlin said. andquot;We'll go forward with appointing a sheriff. One way or another, it will have to be addressed.andquot;

Early returns showed voters saying 65-35 percent they wanted a new sheriff.

andquot;We won it,andquot; said David Darnell, who headed up the signature gathering drive in both recall attempts. andquot;I know the sheriff's department is really happy. It's all over town. They're really happy it turned out this way.andquot;

Sandy Ensley of Brookings, described as one of the hardest workers in gathering signatures for the recall petition, said she spent a lot of time gathering those signatures.

Ensley said she hoped the county commission appoints someone outside the department as sheriff.
