Local students place at state spelling bee

Fifth-grader Kayla Cain of Smith River School placed 21st while sixth- grader Joren Adams of Redwood School placed 30th at the California State Elementary Spelling Championship on Saturday. The state's top elementary school spellers competed representing 32 California counties. The students won school, region and county spelling bees which advanced them to the state competition. The state spelling competition was completed in 13 rounds. The competition was held at Person Theatre on the Sonoma State University campus in Rohnert Park.
