The unveiling of the refurbished S.S. Emidio Memorial highlights several local Memorial Day weekend events.
The memorial service for the S.S. Emidio will start 3 p.m. at Beachfront Park.
Guy Towers and Terry McNamara will have the hull sandblasted with a fresh coat of paint and sealer to protect it from rust by its unveiling. Wooden legs wrapped in rope will be placed on the back of the Emidio for a more nautical appearance. The section is also going to be placed right side up, because it was previously placed upside-down.
The S.S. Emidio became a landmark in 1951, almost 10 years after a Japanese submarine fired a 14-centimeter gun on the ship, killing five. The remaining crew of 43 escaped in lifeboats. Although the Japanese riddled the Emidio with bullets, it did not sink. It ended up resting in Crescent City's harbor.
