Orchestra to perform spring concert

The Curry Del Norte Orchestra will present a series of spring concerts next weekend along the Wild Rivers Coast.

Three andquot;Symphony by the Sea Concertsandquot; are planned - April 28 in Gold Beach, Ore., April 29 in Crescent City and April 30 in Brookings.

Conductor Gary DeRoest has packed the program with favorites from andquot;Pavaneandquot; to selections from andquot;The Bartered Bride.andquot;

Among the performers who'll be featured in the concerts:

?Trumpet section leader, Dean Mickelson, pharmacist and musician, left Taos in 1998 where he played in mariachi bands and the andquot;Kick in the Brassandquot; quintet.Upon moving to Oregon, he joined the University of Oregon Symphonic Band in Eugene, Ore., which took him on a 15 month Canadian tour, and then the Cascade Winds Symphonic Band in Bend, Ore. In 2005, Mickelson came to Brookings and joined the Curry Del Norte Orchestra.

?Gregg Clark, part two of the orchestra's trumpet trio, grew up in Crescent City where he started playing trumpet in the sixth grade.After college at Humboldt State University he retired his trumpet until 1996 when he joined andquot;Tsunami Swingandquot; playing along with his son on trombone, and the Curry Del Norte Orchestra with his daughter on violin.

?Rounding out the trumpet trio is Jerry Darbyshire, a retired forester. He and his family have lived in Brookings since 1989, and during that time he played trumpet in the Brookings Community Jazz Band for two seasons. Mickleson asked him to fill a position in the orchestra's trumpet section this last winter.

?The spring program also features Cy Vandermeer, local tenor soloist, performingandquot;Bring Him Homeandquot; from Les Miserables.Vandermeer has participated in many church choirs and community choruses over the years and continues to do an occasional Sunday morning solo as well. andquot;It's solely from the talented directors of these groups that I learned anything about singing,andquot; he said. Vandermeer and his family moved to Brookings in 1997.
