Hartwick crowned Junior Miss

Deja Hartwick won this year's Junior Miss Scholarship program, amassing $2,300 to help defray the costs of her first year of college at Chico State University.

andquot;All my hard work paid off,andquot; she said. andquot;It was really exciting to get so many awards, especially the Spirit of Junior Miss, and then win.andquot;

Deja placed first in the Scholastic, Fitness, Talent, Self-Expression and Spirit of Junior Miss categories.

Entrants in the contest began practicing in February, working their way up from two practices a week to one each day.

Hartwick kept a tradition alive in her family by winning. Her mother, Gayle Long Hartwick, won the same contest here in 1978.

Gayle pursued a career in teaching, Deja plans to do the same after she majors in liberal studies.

Placing second was Remy Noll, whose prizes total $900 for her wins in Judges Interview and for 1st Runner Up.

Third place, as 2nd Runner-Up, is Linda Taber, who takes a $400 scholarship to her first year at Humboldt State University.
