Curry County Jail inmate dies

GOLD BEACH, Ore. - A Brookings man die Friday while in custody at the Curry County Jail.

Inmate Joe Edward Miller, 47, collapsed in the jails' exercise yard about 4 p.m. Friday, Curry County Sheriff Mark Metcalf said. Several other inmates who were in the yard with Miller immediately summoned Corrections staff when Miller fell.

Corrections staff administered first aid until Cal-Ore ambulance arrived and took over the first aid efforts. Miller was transported to the Curry General Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Sheriff's Office requested investigatory assistance from Brookings Police Department who will conduct an investigation into the death of Miller. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Miller has been in custody since March 13.

Family members and next of kin of Miller have been notified.
