The will update its Del Norte County campus this summer.

The more than $2 million project will renovate the library, expand classrooms, upgrade technology capabilities in the media room and retrofit ventilation, electrical and HVAC systems.

Earlier this month, the College of the Redwood District's nine-member board of trustees approved a bid from TimberWorks, a construction and engineering firm out of Mount Shasta to complete the work.

Plans call for construction to begin after the semester ends in May and finish about six months later, said board trustee Rick Bennett.

andquot; You've got to keep up with the times in terms of the equipment and technology, andquot; Bennett said of the Del Norte Center, built in the early 1980s on Washington Boulevard, across from Del Norte High School.

The work comes from the $40.3 million provided by a 2004 ballot measure to fund renovation projects throughout the College of the Redwoods District. The district includes Del Norte, Humboldt and part of Mendocino counties.

The measure set an $18 fee for $100,000 of assessed property value each year. Del Norte County rejected the proposal, but the entire district approved it. The measure has since funded projects at the college district's other campuses.

Future projects at the Del Norte campus include rebuilding the science lab.

While the district's student enrollment has dropped, now totaling about 4,500 each year, Del Norte's campus continues to enroll about 500 of them annually.

andquot;Del Norte has held steady, andquot; Bennett said of the local student body.
