Local residents looking to explore Del Norte County's oldest and largest living dune can join a two-mile walk with California State Parks botanist Laura Julian on Sunday.

The event will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., starting from the Lake Earl Wildlife Area Headquarters at 2591 Old Mill Road off Northcrest Drive.

Julian will discuss the region's plants, local growing conditions and threats from human intrusion.

Participants can also help pull invasive beach grass from the dunes.

Farmers planted the grasses in the late 1800s and early 1900s to stabilize naturally moving sand dunes in order to farm and build along the coast.

Rain would cancel the event, hosted by the North Coast Redwood Interpretive Association.

For more information, call Susan Calla at 465-6191, or Julian at 668-4088 or the association at 488-2169.
