The Crescent City Police Department has released the name of the man found murdered in a home at Pacific Terrace Manor.

The victim is 42-year-old James Earl McElroy, a parolee who has served time in San Quentin State Prison and has a long history of criminal activity, dating back to 1981.

On Monday, McElroy's elderly roommate, Inez Rehfeld, called police informing them that he was dead in her house.

McElroy first went to prison when he was convicted of cruelty to a child and inflicting corporal injury on a spouse, according to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Since being paroled, McElroy has had numerous encounters with the Crescent City Police and Del Norte County Sheriff's Office. Many of these were assaults and public intoxications.

Police are still awaiting an autopsy to confirm what killed McElroy, but they said he was definitely stabbed with a sharp object.

Originally, police said he was stabbed in the neck and in the abdomen, but they have recanted until they have the official autopsy report.

andquot; There are observations on the body at this instance that may or may not portray what they really are (due to the decomposition of his body),andquot; Crescent City Police Chief Doug Plack said.

But Plack said he expects more thorough answers today when he receives the autopsy reports from the Shasta County Coroner's Office in Redding.

Police do not have any suspects, but they are exploring possibilities, Plack said.

andquot;Right now we are working through the investigation, and we are looking at the direction the evidence will portray, andquot; he said.
