Decision to punch officer earns man two years in prison

Due to what Del Norte County District Attorney Mike Riese dubbed a andquot;defiant act of stupidity, andquot; a Crescent City man will spend two years of his life in a prison cell for punching his probation officer.

John Patrick Bering, 26, was sentenced Thursday in the Del Norte County Superior Court to two years in prison for his violent outburst when he only should have received probation.

According to Riese, Bering would have been given probation for a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction for hitting his wife.

However, on Nov. 9, Bering had a meeting with his probation officer regarding a previous domestic violence conviction.

He showed up drunk and struck his P.O., an act worthy of a two-year sentence.
