Making New Year's predictions may be just as, if not more, popular than conjuring resolutions for the year ahead.

Besides, looking into a crystal ball lessens the responsibility of holding oneself to high, sometimes unrealistic goals. And it's way more fun.

The Daily Triplicate asked locals to make predictions for 2007 on a local, national and global level.

Following are some of their responses.

Rick Bennett

College of the Redwoods trustee

With a new mix of Del Norte County Supervisors, andquot;it's going to be a period of adjustment.andquot;

andquot;Hopefully the transition will work smoothly and we'll certainly hope everyone will be working together, as they'd like to.andquot;

And looking at the bigger picture nationally and world-wide, andquot;I'm afraid we're not out of the woods as far as foreign policy goes it doesn't look too optimistic at this point.

andquot;It's not anything to be too anxious or hopeful about and it's not a great feeling, but we'll just keep our chins up and belly to the wind and keep going forward.andquot;

Randy Ansley

Battery Point Lighthouse co-keeper.

More tourist will come to Del Norte County. With the help of a andquot;loose associationandquot; of local's literature about the area and the possibility of allowing people to spend the night at the lighthouse, andquot;I predict we're going to have a better tourism season this year.andquot;

andquot;People are so enthusiastic about coming to the lighthouse and we love it, we love to have company.andquot;

And hopefully the Iraq conflict will be resolved.

andquot;I hope they can get a resolution to the conflict in the mid-East. Get everybody to play well together.andquot;

andquot;It's time to clean up and come home, and I applaud every service person that's over there.andquot;

And though it's not exactly a prediction, andquot;It would be nice if we could get a pizza delivered.andquot;

Bob Berkowitz

Del Norte County School Board member

Forest Reserve funds will be restored to Del Norte County and other rural counties nationwide, as the school district will be successful in getting legislation through Congress.

The Del Norte County Library will be saved, using creative solutions without resorting to new taxes.

A new spirit of cooperation will evolve between the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors, the school board and Crescent City Council to revitalize the community economically, spiritually and socially.

Ray Geary

College of the Redwoods-Del Norte interim vice-president

The community college will continue to meet the educational needs of the the area. andquot;And we'll make every effort to increase our enrollment and to make sure we have the courses students need.

Construction projects at the college will be completed on time, andquot;and won't affect any of our regular class operations.andquot;

Michele Thomas

The Daily Triplicate publisher

andquot;I predict Al Gore will win an Academy Award for 'An Inconvenient Truth' for best documentary,andquot; Thomas said, adding that not only is the film's content outstanding, but so is the way the information was presented.

The Del Norte County Library will receive much-needed repairs.

andquot;With the community's effort, the library's roof won't be leaking next winter and the orange carpet will be replaced with something less worn and dated.andquot;

Sarah Sampels

Outgoing Del Norte County supervisor

No more plumbing problems.

andquot;I predict I'm going to be able to flush my toilet for another week,andquot; said Sampels, who since Dec. 26, has been having septic tank problems at her home and has been paying plumbers to fix the mess. andquot;My friends and neighbors have been very good about me using their plumbing,andquot; she said.

And andquot;a bright future for the county and the harbor, and hoping everything will go well.andquot;

Pat Medina

Crescent City-Del Norte County Cham-ber of Com-merce director

More tour-ists. andquot;Del Norte County and Crescent City will entertain more visitors this year than ever before.andquot;

And that Del Norte will get more recognition from state officials.

Lastly, andquot;I would hope for peace in the Middle East, but I don't know if I can predict that.

andquot;You hate to see wars that drag on and drag on, because people don't remember why they're fighting them.andquot;
