Two Crescent City boys were killed in a car accident Saturday morning on Highway 199.
The two were identified as Clifford Jones, 16, and Jake Scott, 14.
According to a California Highway Patrol report, Jones was driving a 1994 Ford Escort with Scott as his passenger east on Highway 199 andquot;at a high rate of speed.andquot;
At about mile post marker 9.27, Jones lost control of the car on wet pavement. The car slid across the double-yellow lines into westbound traffic, the report said, and was struck by a 1990 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by Michael Matthews, 51, of Portland, Ore.
Matthews told the CHP that he immediately applied his brakes, trying to avoid the car, but collided with the the Escort on the passenger side.
Matthews was not hurt in the crash, according to the report.
Highway 199 was closed to traffic for short periods as CHP officers investigated the scene and removed debris from the road.
Both vehicles involved in the crash were taken to the CHP yard for further inspection.
The cause of the accident has not been officially determined.
This is the third fatal accident in as many weeks in Del Norte County. Both Jones and Scott were nephews of Crescent City City Councilmember William Mickey Youngblood.
