A raging fire broke out yesterday doing major damage to a home on Hiouchi Drive.

The two-story, middle-class home at the extreme end of the street, owned by Art and Shannon Aten, was engulfed in flames as firefighters arrived.

The owner says its a total loss. They lost everything, said Deputy Sheriff Frank Villarreal.

Although it is believed no one was in the home when the fire broke out, Shannon Atens beloved dogs may have been victims of the fire, Villarreal said, although yesterday, information was very preliminary.

The cause or origin of the fire also was unknown as fire crews mopped up at the scene, Villarreal said.

The Atens were on the scene shortly after the fire broke out, but werent home when the fire erupted.

Friends comforted Shannon Aten at a nearby home and Art Aten examined the destruction with friends and firefighters. He had no comment.

Gasquet Fire, Smith River Fire and Crescent Fire Protection District crews responded, as well as the Del Norte County Sheriffs Department and the California Highway Patrol.
