Warrior Memories: Boys basketball officially begins

Steve Chittock

In 1921 and 1922 a group of Del Norte High School boys had the dream of someday being able to play basketball at the high school level.

The school had no gym, so like the girls that had to play in the jail house exercise yard, the boys practiced by shooting at a hoop in the band stand at the plaza which is now the baseball park. They had hopes of playing in an invitational tournament in Arcata, but with no coach their dream didn't come true.

This group did not give up and in 1924 the gym that is now the recreation department gym was completed.

Cyrus Quick, who was the high school principal, was their coach for the 1924-25 season which became the first official basketball season for the Warriors.

The players on that team were Ston and Louis Yachamouich forwards,

Jim Brooks and Jack Stolts guards and Joe Jenkins center. Jack Taylor

and Don Painter came off the bench. Ston Yachamouich was the first of

three Stons that have played for the Warriors.

Quick was a graduate of the University of California Berkandshy;eley. His

first job after graduation from college was principal at Del Norte. He

only coached the team one year before the gentleman old timers still

call "the coach" took the reins.

Edwin Frazer, a standout athlete from the University of Oregon took

over. Ed coached the Warrior football, basketball and baseball teams

for the next 20 years. He is remembered fondly by those of us that had

the privilege of playing for him.

I got to play for him because when he retired from the high school

he came over to Crescent Elk and coached their basketball team. He was

truly dedicated to the youth of Del Norte County.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte

High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors, had

an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt State University.

Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a number of years

before retiring.
