The 1982 Del Norte High girls volleyball team was a sign of good things to come for the Warriors.
Debbie Lorenzi took over the volleyball program in 1981 after serving as the junior varsity coach under Sharon Wold. The fall of 1982 was an exciting time for Warrior fans. The football team won the league championship for the first time in 23 years, and made its first trip to the North Coast Section Playoffs, and the volleyball team did the same. The Warrior girls posted a league record of 11-1.
Mary Timmer, a 1983 graduate, was a big part of the team's success.
Mary started her Warrior career playing with the junior varsity team as a freshman. As a sophomore during the 1980 season, Mary was moved to the varsity squad by coach Sharon Wold.
As a junior playing for first-year head coach Debbie Lorenzi, Mary
and her teammates really started to shine. The 1981 team really showed
the great things to come, posting a league record of 7-5.
The 1982 Warriors really brought excitement to the court. Leading the
girls to their first league championship and taking the team to the
section playoffs for the first time, Mary and her teammates started a
tradition where the Warriors expected to win the championship every
year. Mary and Tressa Rodgers both won White Stars for the year.
After graduation from Del Norte, Mary went to Questa Junior College
in San Luis Obispo, where she continued an outstanding career playing
two years there. After leaving Questa she enrolled at Chico State
University, where she played her final two years, making the
All-American team as a senior.
In talking to Mary's coach Debbie Lorenzi, her praise for Marys work
ethic, athletic ability and attitude really tells what a super young
lady she is.
Mary is married and I understand now lives in the Redding area. She
was another of the many outstanding girls who make Warrior volleyball so
much fun to watch.
Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte
High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and
graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt
State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a
number of years before retiring.
