Warrior Memories: Early history of football at Del Norte

Dick Trone

The first regular interscholastic football game played by the Del Norte Warriors was in 1924, but football was first played at Del Norte in the fall of 1918, where it seemed to gain support by the boys as their favorite sport.

With interest growing, a team was put together in the fall of 1920 to attempt to play some games. They were able to play two makeshift games against the local grammar school. The high school came away as victors in both games.

In 1922, a group of 16 young Warriors raised enough money to buy regular football uniforms and serious Del Norte football began. The first game was against the local team and although the Warriors were heavily outweighed, they won 44-0. Their second game required a trip to Grants Pass, Ore., where they lost 26-12. The Warriors were missing their fullback and captain Ralph Case and the intense heat took its toll on the thin Warrior squad. The last game of the season was against Brookings, where Del Norte won 32-12.

A second game was scheduled with Brookings but it failed to show up

and forfeited the game so the first season record ended with a 3-1

record.

Many present-day Warrior fans may recognize the names of those

Warrior pioneers as fathers, grandfathers or great-grandfathers. The

lineup featured Ralph Case, captain and fullback; Harold Jenkin, right

halfback; James Miller, left halfback; Kenneth Chapman, quarterback;

Lewis Yackamouih, right end; Louis Pedrazzini, right tackle; Marion

McLaren, right guard; Arthur Cooper, center; Verald Jones, left guard;

Kenneth Masters, left tackle; Ston Yackamouih, left end.

Subs were Joe Jenkin, Edward McLaughlin, Burton Smith, Clair Brogan,

and William Muncy. Theses guys had to be able to play any position.

I know that there are names on this list that I recognize from my

youth. It's always fun for me to look back at the Warrior history of the

sport that has been such a special part of my life.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte

High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and

graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt

State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a

number of years before retiring.
