It's fun to look back at home- grown Warriors who have worn both the red and white and the blue and gold of Del Norte High School.
Rod Griffin, a 1953 graduate, was one of those. When Rod entered Del Norte as a freshman in 1949, the Warriors were in their last year of wearing red and white.
Rod started putting his mark on the Warriors' sports picture in his freshman year. He started out playing varsity football and was a varsity letterman for four years. He was an intelligent, tough young athlete who could play, and play well, at any position. During his first three years he played as a lineman, then as a senior he was moved to quarterback.
As a quarterback he led the Warriors to their first victory over the
Eureka Loggers in recent history. When football ended Rod went right to
the basketball court, where he made the varsity basketball team as a

in leading the Warriors to the Humboldt-Del Norte League Championship
and was selected an all-league performer.
Rod was much more than just an athlete, as he was very active in
student body government and held both class and student body offices.
Rod also tried his hand at acting. During his senior year he played the
part of Buckley Dunster in the senior play. With all the time he put
into so many school activities, his name always appeared on the honor
roll for his academic achievement.
After graduating from Del Norte, Rod enrolled at the University of
California at Berkeley, where he received his college degree. After
graduation Rod went into business in the Bay Area.
Rod was a good friend and a great teammate. Unfortunately, he passed
away at a fairly young age. He is still talked about and missed by those
of us who had the privilege of playing with him. He was a class act in
Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte
High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and
graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt
State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a
number of years before retiring.
