Warrior Memories: Shawn Lesina a master of 3 sports

Dick Trone

During the 1980 to 1989 period there were a number of excellent three-sport athletes to don the blue and gold and compete for the Warriors. It would be really hard to try and pick which one was the best as each had special individual talents.

One that would have to receive real consideration is Shawn Lesina. Shawn is a 1986 Del Norte graduate who provided Warrior fans with a lot of thrills on the football field, the basketball court and the baseball diamond. It is especially fun for me to write about Shawn since he is the son of a former teammate of mine, Bob Lesina, class of 1951.

On the football field, Shawn started his career as a freshman playing quarterback, a position he was very good at. As a sophomore he scored six touchdowns from that position.

Shawn is such an excellent athlete that his talents were such that he

could play any skill position and play it well. When he moved to the

varsity, Blaine Lopez was holding down the quarterback spot so Shawn was

used as a defensive back, wide receiver and a running back and was

outstanding at all of them.

When football ended he took to the basketball court, where again he

was outstanding. As a freshman he started for the junior varsity. As a

sophomore he moved to the varsity and immediately became an impact

player. During his junior and senior seasons he was the Warriors' top

scorer and was selected All Humboldt-Del Norte league both years. As a

senior he was selected Most Valuable Player at the Yreka tournament.

While his football and basketball talents were great, his skill when

he took to the baseball field might even have been better. When Shawn

took to the mound he was fun to watch. His fastball was clocked in the

high 90s at a tournament in Fort Bragg. He is a truly talented athlete.

After graduation Shawn married his high school sweetheart, Jennifer

Barrett. Jennifer is also a talented former Warrior athlete. They have

two children, son Logan and daughter Lauryn, who are both Del Norte

graduates and produced a lot of thrills for Warrior fans.

Shawn now works for the Department of Corrections at Pelican Bay

State Prison and he and Jennifer can regularly be seen supporting the

Warriors.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte

High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and

graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt

State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a

number of years before retiring.
