Dick Trone

One of my favorite Warrior memories to write about is when I can look at a former Warrior athlete that returns to Del Norte after college graduation and spends the rest of their working years making a positive impact on the youth of our community.

Patrick Finley, a 1965 Warrior graduate, really fits that bill. While at Del Norte, Pat was involved in both the football and basketball programs, where he teamed with the likes of Kim Kellenberg, Greg Gatlin and others to provide Warrior fans with many exciting times.

With his athletic involvement he still found time to be involved in

many other types of school activities. He served on his class steering

committee all four years, and was class president his junior year. He

was active in the "D" club and the Key Club. Pat also became a life

member of the California Scholastic Federation and a member of the

National Honor Society, recognizing his academic excellence.

After graduating from college, Pat returned to Del Norte where he

went to work, first as a teacher and then as a school administrator at

both the elementary school and high school levels. I had the privilege

of knowing Pat while he was principal at Redwood School, Crescent Elk

and at Del Norte High School. You only had to be around Pat a short time

to realize his sincere concern for both the students and teachers he

was working with.

Pat married his high school sweetheart Bonnie Sullivan, sister of

Warrior Hall of Famer Bill Sullivan.

Though Pat is now retired you can continue to still see him and his

wife regularly at Warrior events, continuing to support our youth. As

you might guess, I look at Pat and Bonnie as two very special Warriors.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte

High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and

graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt

State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a

number of years before retiring.
