Dick Trone

It seems like just a short while ago that I entered the halls of the old Del Norte High School as a freshman in the fall of 1947.

This was the old school located on the corner of 9th and H Street and the school colors were red and white. I remember two of the first students I met were seniors Dick Harmer and Allen Slater. They were both Warrior athletes that I had watched play while I was still at Crescent Elk.

They gave me what was then the traditional freshman greeting, but from then on both helped me become a part of the Warrior family, Dick Harmer especially. Dick was involved in all phases of Warrior activities and was a starting guard on the varsity football team. This was a group that was still recovering from football being dropped during World War II. They played a rather limited schedule of only four games during the 1947 season. Since I was too young to play football as a freshman I didn't get to play football with Dick. When spring rolled around I did have the privilege of playing baseball with him. He was an excellent infielder.

Dick was involved with all types of Warrior activities. He started

his senior year as student body president, he took part in the senior

play, was editor of the school newspaper, worked on the annual staff and

was president of the "D" Club. With all of these various activities he

also had outstanding grades and was a member of the California

Scholastic Federation.

After graduation, Dick went on to Humboldt State where he continued

his baseball career. He also continued his involvement in other school

activities and served as student body president at Humboldt. After

graduation Dick served as business manager for the student body. After a

few years in that position he became a very successful broker in the

lumber industry. He is a true multi-talented ex-Warrior that I enjoyed

getting to know through the years.

He is now retired and living in the Arcata area with his wife and

enjoys spending time with his kids and grandkids.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte

High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and

graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt

State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a

number of years before retiring.
