Dick Trone

As I write this week's column I do so with mixed emotions. I have a happy heart and a sad heart.

This is because Bill Choy, our local sports editor, told me he is leaving the Triplicate to become the sports editor for the paper in Yreka, the Siskiyou Daily News. I am happy for Bill in that it puts him closer to the wonderful woman he is engaged to. She like Bill attended Southern Oregon University in Ashland and still lives and works there.

I am sad, because during the years Bill has been the sports editor for the Triplicate I have really appreciated what he has done to cover Warrior sports. I know many Warrior fans really appreciate how he keeps track of recent Del Norte athletes that are competing at higher levels. We all like to know how former Warriors like Buck Pierce, Cody Hoffman, Kelsy Hintz and others are doing.

During the time Bill has been here he has become a good friend and

mentor to me. I would not have the privilege of writing these columns if

not for Bill. He approached me shortly after we first met about doing

these columns about my experiences in Del Norte. I for a long time said I

didn't think it was something I would enjoy doing.

He kept after me to at least give it a try. I am sure glad he did

because it turned out to be something I really enjoy. It is a real

pleasure to meet and get to know former Warriors I had only heard about,

as well as writing about so many I know and respect. I have Bill Choy

to thank for this

One good thing though, is that when the Warriors play in Yreka we

will expect him to treat them special, and we play in Yreka every year

for basketball.

Bill, myself and Warrior fans wish you the best as you start your new

endeavor. We will miss you. You have been a special part of the

Warriors these past five years.

I personally will always call Bill a great friend.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte

High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and

graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt

State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a

number of years before retiring.
