New gallery opens at harbor

Crescent City artist Laura Wiens has opened High Ground Gallery in the harbor.

The gallery is located above Crescent Harbor Art Gallery at 140 Marine Way. Many of the oil paintings on display there are of local scenes, and range in size from 4-by-5-inch miniatures to 36-by-48-inch wall paintings.

Wiens is an oil painter who has lived in Del Norte County for more than four years. Her paintings are also currently exhibited at Mountainsong Gallery in Carmel and 2nd Street Gallery in Bandon, Ore.

High Ground Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 1-5 p.m., and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.

There will be a grand opening reception there during the next Crescent City Art Walk on May 4.

Student Art Show event is Friday

The Gallery of Arts and Culture will be featuring the artwork of local students of all ages.

The Student Art Show will run from Friday through May 25.

The show will feature the artwork of preschool through high school

students, including watercolor paintings, colored pencil and graphite

drawings, collage, ceramics, mosaics, and more.

There will be a reception at the gallery, 175 H St., to open the new show Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Guest speaker Garretta Lamore, a local artist, will give a presentation at 6 p.m.

'Comedy Night' is tonight

Lucky 7 Casino presents its "Comedy Night" at 8 p.m. today in the Club 7 Sports Bar.

The headliner will be Gabriel Rutledge, a past winner of the

prestigious Seattle International Comedy Competition. Rutledge has

appeared on Comedy Central and Comedy TV.

His CD, "Sometimes Laughter Hurts," can be heard on the

"Raw Dog" Comedy Channel on 2rauss/XM Satellite Radio. The evening also features comedian Justin Haynes.

Attendees must be 21 or older; there is no cover charge.

Flamenco concert next Thursday

The Del Norte-Curry Community Concert Association presents the Chris

Jandaacute;come Flamenco Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. April 26 in Crescent Elk

Auditorium, 10th and G streets in Crescent City

The ensemble features the guitar wizardry of Chris Burton Jandaacute;come

(,) plus a vocalist, bassist, percussionist and

three flamenco dancers. Admission is free to all who hold season

memberships, and to those new patrons who purchase a membership to next

year's season before or on that date.

Art demo next Thursday

The demonstration artist for April at Crescent Harbor Gallery is

Deborah Dawson, who will give a watercolor demo beginning at noon April

26, preceded by a potluck.

Crescent Harbor Gallery's artist of the month for April is Brookings

artist Buzz Stewart; a sampling of his work is on display throughout

April, along with pieces by other gallery members.

"Creative Mondays" are currently being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on

the first, third and fourth Mondays of the month. For more

'Taming of the Shrew' closes

Brookings Harbor Community Theater's production of William

Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" has concluding performances this

weekend in the Harbor Performing Arts Center. The Friday and Saturday

shows start at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets cost

The Chetco Pelican Players' production of "Annie Get Your Gun" runs
