Ex-deputy arrested for drugs

Triplicate Staff

Former Del Norte County sheriff's Deputy Joseph Garcia was arrested on suspicion of unlawful possession of a prescription drug Thursday.

The arrest came when the Sheriff's Office served a search warrant on his home in Gasquet following a prior probation search where Deputy Richard Griffin found a generic form of Vicodin, sheriff's Commander Tim Athey said.

Garcia was booked and released at the Del Norte County Jail.

Garcia is on probation after being convicted of three felony counts of receiving stolen property. He accepted a plea deal last year after initially facing 14 felony charges, including first-degree burglary, embezzlement, theft from an elder and grand theft.

He was released from the Mendocino County jail last November after serving about five months of jail time - about half of his jail sentence.

A prison sentence of about four years was suspended as part of his plea deal.
