Food coupons for seniors available on Wednesday

The Del Norte Senior Center will be distributing coupons for seniors at the Farmers Market starting Wednesday.

Each eligible person will receive a free coupon booklet worth $20 (10 $2 coupons) that can be redeemed at certified farmers' markets throughout Del Norte and Humboldt counties to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.

Those eligible for coupons must be at least 60 years old and meet the income guidelines: for a single person, a maximum monthly income of $1,679; for a two-person household, a maximum monthly income of $2,268.

Coupons will be distributed at the Del Norte Senior Center on

Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on a

first-come, first-served basis.

People who would like to participate but have limited mobility may

appoint a proxy to pick up coupons or shop on their behalf. Proxy forms

are available at the Del Norte Senior Center and must be signed by the

recipient prior to receiving coupons. Organizers request that this be

done prior to Wednesday.

Annual Health Fair unfolds today at county fairgrounds

The Del Norte Community Health Fair offers a plethora of information on everything related to health.

Admission is free to the Saturday event at the fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m..

There will be more than 30 exhibitors, including the Area 1 Agency on

Aging, Del Norte American Red Cross, Denti-Cal, Prostrate Cancer

Support Group, Tobacco Use Prevention Program and Taking Off Pounds


That's in addition to the usual supporters: DHHS, Sutter Coast

Hospital, Del Norte Community Health Center, Del Norte County Unified

School District and First 5 Del Norte.

There will be information on nutrition, safety, first aid, physical

activity and saving money on prescriptions, said Vanessa Schaub, a

health clerk for Public Health .

The "Re-Think Your Drink" campaign will have samples of the infused

water featured at last Saturday's Farmers Market along with information

about the hidden costs of sugar-sweeten drinks.

Del Norte High School cheerleaders will be serving food; proceeds will support the team.

Booths will have healthy snacks, and the skating rink will open with free admission.

There will be door prizes and possibly live entertainment. The Lost Coast Kids' Gym will be doing demonstrations.

Eureka forum will focus on heart health Thursday

The Redwood Memorial and St. Joseph Hospital foundations' "Community

Health Forum" series kicks off Thursday with a free educational forum on

heart and blood vessel health.

"Heart and Blood Vessel Health," will feature presentations by

cardiologists from Humboldt Medical Specialists - Cardiology in Eureka.

Dr. Andrew Michaels, Dr. Hugh Parker and Dr. James Schipper will cover

cardiovascular disease prevention, diagnosis and local treatment
