Authorities check 62 registered sex offenders

Anthony Skeens, The Triplicate

Authorities spent two days combing the county this week to ensure registered sex offenders were in compliance with laws.

The Del Norte County Sheriff's Office and Humboldt County authorities contacted 62 registered offenders Wednesday and Thursday to ensure their addresses were correct and they were not violating any other terms, said sheriff's Commander Tim Athey.

They made one arrest for a violation and five other people are currently under investigation, Athey said.

"It was a good sweep," said Athey. "They were able to confirm lots of

addresses."

Some of the offenders don't have addresses because they are

transients, so authorities actually track their location by taking down

the encampments they are sleeping at and then check to make sure the

information is accurate, Athey said.

Sweeps are conducted randomly throughout the year for the more than

100 offenders registered in the county, Athey said.

Information about sex offenders in the county can be accessed at

meganslaw.ca.gov. At the bottom of the page there is a link to access

the sex offender locator site.

Humboldt County authorities assisted in the local sweep as part of a

statewide program to pull resources together to monitor sex offenders,

Athey said.
