Training opportunitieswith Police and Sheriff
Local teens considering a law enforcement career have immediate opportunities at both the Crescent City Police Department and the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office.
The Redwood Coast Explorer Leadership Academy will be held Aug. 13-18, and organizers are still looking for students to fill a few spots.
It's a week-long program designed to introduce students to law enforcement, leadership training and physical training.
Coordinated by the Crescent City Police Department, the program typically takes participants who are already Explorer Scouts, but this year scholarship opportunities are available for teens interested in joining the group, said police Sgt. Erik Apperson, who coordinates the academy.
"I'd like to select a handful of kids to come through as potential Explorers," said Apperson. "It's a week long and if they were accepted by scholarship all they would need to provide is gear similar to what they would bring camping."
He said he is seeking teens 14-18 to fill the spots.
The program will be held at Del Norte High School this year. Teens will be instructed in ethics, gangs, traffic stops and weaponless defense tactics and drug recognition during the day and sleep on cots in the school at night.
They will also receive CPR and first-aid certification.
"If they are interested they need to get ahold of me as soon as possible," said Apperson. Hise-mail is firstname.lastname@example.org.
Meanwhile, the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office is seeking its own Explorer recruits as deputies Jerrin Gill, Thomas Rosina and Richard Donaldson work to revamp the program.
"We're making a big push to recruit in our program," said Gill. "We have equipment available, so it will be no cost to them."
The Explorer program helps to develops skills outside of law enforcement, such as leadership, teamwork and professional interaction, Gill said.
Teens interested in joining the Sheriff's Explorers can pick up an application at the Sheriff's Office, 650 5th St. Questions can be directed to Gill at 464-4191 ext. 418 or email@example.com.
The Del Norte Sheriff Explorer Facebook page can be accessed at facebook.com/#!/DelNorteCountySheriffExplorers.
While the two departments maintain separate Explorer programs, potential participants in either one can attend the upcoming Leadership Academy, along with current Explorers.
