Man injuredafter vehiclechase in CC
A man who was shot at while being pursued by officers Tuesday afternoon in Crescent City was later treated for a non-gunshot wound at Sutter Coast Hospital, authorities said Wednesday.
Initial reports suggested Donald Heggie, of Salinas, was shot in the foot, but after doctors examined the wound it was concluded he hadn't been, said Sheriff Dean Wilson.
"If he had received the wound earlier there would have been at least some small amount of blood at the car," said Wilson.
The pursuit ended in the driveway of a residence on Whaleview Court off Pebble Beach Drive at about 3:40 p.m., when the driver fled from a red pickup into a wooded area.
It's possible he was injured either when a police car hit him as he fled the vehicle or when he was running from officers through woods before he was caught, Wilson said.
After about 10 minutes, he was brought out on a stretcher with a splint on his foot.
Heggie was arrested on suspicion of receiving known stolen property of $400 or less, two counts of resisting a peace officer, evading officers with wanton disregard for safety, battery on a peace officer and assault with a deadly weapon.
The pursuit began around 2:30 p.m.near the Del Norte County Superior Courthouse, with Heggie fleeing north toward the Seabreeze Apartments, 1045 E. Condor St., said District Attorney Jon Alexander.
He declined to say what precipitated the initial pursuit.
"Deputies were able to stop the vehicle near those apartments and attempted to apprehend a single male driver later identified as Donald Heggie," said Alexander.
Heggie ignored deputies' commands, Alexander said.
"As the vehicle attempted to flee, a deputy fired multiple shots from his duty weapon toward the vehicle," said Alexander.
The DA declined to identify the deputy who fired the shots.
Crescent City resident Jamie Moore said she saw a deputy fire three rounds at the vehicle as it was driving away.
The pursuit then continued through Crescent City and onto Pebble Beach Drive until it finished at Whaleview Court, Alexander said.
An officer from the Crescent City Police Department aided in the pursuit.
The DA's Office is investigating whether any criminal charge should be filed related to the shooting. The investigation report is expected to be completed in two weeks, said DA Investigator A.C. Field.
An internal investigation is also being conducted by the Sheriff's Office as to whether proper protocol was followed during the pursuit, Wilson said.
