Elk mating season gets serious
'Tis the time of year for rough courtship. The largest species of elk in North America, Roosevelt elk, typically mate in mid-September through October.
To compete for female elk, testosterone-charged males violently rut against other males, clashing antlers.
The frequently bloody mating ritual can often be observed from the Elk Meadow Cabins within the elk mating area at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.
Through October, an "Elk Rut Package" is offered by Elk Meadow Cabins for $219 per night. Each cabin sleeps six people.
The male Roosevelt elk average 875 pounds and stand 5 feet tall at their shoulders.
"While male Roosevelt elk put on a terrifying display, their fury is focused entirely on each other. They are otherwise inquisitive but standoffish to people, which adds to their appeal to wildlife viewers. Rutting behaviors can be watched easily, without disturbing the elk, though viewers are cautioned not to approach the elk," according to a press release for the cabins on Digitaljournal.com .
Packages can be obtained in advance by calling (866) 733-9637. More cabin information can be found atwww.redwoodadvent

School Board may weigh in
The local school board may consider a resolution endorsing Proposition 30, Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed tax initiative.
Del Norte County Unified School District could lose $1.4 million in funding and may be forced to cut school days this coming year if Propositions 30 and 38 fail, according to Superintendent Don Olson.
Olson gave a presentation to the Board on Thursday outlining the differences between Proposition 30, which was proposed by the governor, and Proposition 38, also known as the Molly Munger initiative. He is expected to come back with a resolution for the board to endorse Proposition 30 at the Oct. 11 meeting.
Proposition 30 would increase the sales tax by one-quarter cent for every dollar for four years, Olson said. It would also increase personal income tax rates for upper-income taxpayers for seven years. Proposition 38 would increase personal income taxes for every taxpayer except single taxpayers with an income of $7,316 or less. According to Olson, this tax increase would last for 12 years.
Proposition 30 is expected to raise about $6 billion in additional state revenues with 89 percent of the funding going to Kandndash;12 schools and 11 percent going to community colleges, Olson said. According to Deputy Superintendent Rodney Jahn, if Proposition 30 passes, the district may receive an extra $200 per student. There are currently 3,440 students enrolled in Del Norte County Unified School District schools, he said.
If it passes, Proposition 38 is expected to raise about $10 billion in additional annual state revenues. According to Olson, 60 percent of the extra revenue would go to Kandndash;12 schools, 10 percent would go to preschool programs and 30 percent would go to state debt payments.
