New bins for garbage, recycling

Emily Jo Cureton, The Triplicate

Sixty snappy-looking sets of garbage and recycling bins are going up around town, featuring laser-cut images of local icons like the Battery Point Lighthouse and the seals of Crescent City and Del Norte County.

Bears need not apply, as the containers are animal-proof; bought and installed by Recology Del Norte pursuant of the latest collection franchise agreement with the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority.

"The new containers will be a significant improvement over the current system and will expand recycling opportunities to our community," said Authority Director Kevin Hendrick in a press release from the city.

Tommy Sparrow is the General Manager of Recology Del Norte.

"This is a great example of a public-private partnership of our organizations working together to achieve a common goal of providing a better product and improving the appearance of our community," Sparrow said in the same release.

Over the phone, Sparrow stressed that the new cans are for "pleasure garbage" and incidental recycling, not household overflow.

"We are hoping that people will use them as they are designed to be used ... like after eating lunch," he said.
