The opening of the commercial Dungeness crab season in Northern California will be delayed until at least Dec. 31.

Charlton Bonham, director of California Department of Fish and Game, made the decision Tuesday afternoon to delay the crab fishery in Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino counties based on poor quality conditions of crab tested during the first week of December.

The Northern California season was scheduled to open Dec. 1, but in mid-November the director delayed the season until Dec. 16 due to tests indicating the crab were thin on meat content.

Also on Tuesday, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife delayed that state's commercial Dungeness crab season until Dec. 30.
