School choirs' Madrigal events have medieval flavor

Experience a traditional 16th century-style Christmas feast this weekend during the Del Norte High School Music Department's Madrigal Dinners.

Three performances will be offered: Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. and a Saturday matinee at noon at the Elk Valley Rancheria Community Center, 2332 Howland Hill Road.

This annual event, in its 22nd year, features the madrigal and the women's choirs - more than 50 students in all - decked out in medieval costume complete with the pageantry and ceremony of old England, and a catered dinner.

Attendees will be regaled with brass fanfares, traditional period instrumental music, ensemble dinner entertainment and a formal concert in period attire.

"The Madrigal Dinners are very steeped in tradition," said Del Norte High School music director Dan Sedgwick, who is in his fifth year at the school. "It's a really fun show. So much work goes into it, but it's so worth it."

The monies raised go toward material costs, as well as the high school choir's Ireland music tour in 2014.

Cost is $30 for dinner performances and $25 for the matinee. Tickets can be purchased through today only at Del Norte Office Supply or by calling Sedgwick at 464-0272 or (805) 453-5871. Dinner entree choices must be made when purchasing tickets.
