Keola Beamer performs Friday

The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness presents the third performance of its 30th anniversary season, Hawaiian slack key guitarist Keola Beamer with hula master Moanalani Beamer, at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G St.

Beamer, who currently lives in Lahaina on Maui, finds it "overwhelming" that his own album ("Maiama Ko Aloha" or "Keep Your Love") and "The Descendants" movie soundtrack (which also carries his music) have both been nominated this year for Grammy awards.

Jan. 17 reception for juried show

DNACA's 21st annual Juried Multimedia Exhibition is the current Art in Public Places show up at the Del Norte County Courthouse, 450 H St.

A reception for the 15 participating artists will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, and the public is invited.

Artists include Nancy Chernak, B.J. Clausen, Cathy Dean, Betty Depee, Larry Depee, Rosemary Garcia, Pauline Holmes, Doug Minty, Susan Moore, Muriel Northrip, Diane J. Dance concert set Jan. 18-19

Del Norte High School dance presents its annual winter concert, titled "Around the World," at 7 p.m. Jan. 18 and 19 in Crescent Elk Auditorium.

The performance will have a lot of variety, and features dances from various continents and cultures, as well as an ocean theme, a section of dances based on different emotions, and a group of dances portraying numerous phobias.

Jan. activities at Harbor Gallery

Crescent Harbor Gallery's artist of the month for January is Chris Hutchens, who moved to Del Norte County in 1990 and then started attending the gallery's Saturday painting classes.

"Creative Mondays" continue to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Monday at the gallery.

Red Molly due in Pistol River

The Pistol River Concert Association presents Red Molly at 8 p.m. on Saturdayin the Pistol River Friendship Hall.Since 2004, this Americana trio has been bringing audiences three-part harmonies, crisp musicianship (dobro/banjo/bass/guitar), and an engaging stage presence.

The band consists of Laurie MacAllister (bass, banjo), Abbie Gardner (dobro, banjo) and Molly Venter (guitar.This) year, the group was invited to open multiple shows for Willie Nelson, and appeared at the venerable RockyGrass festival in Colorado.

Student artwork, poetry due Jan. 31

The California Coastal Commission invites California students in kindergarten through grade 12 to submit artwork or poetry with a California coastal or marine theme to the annual Coastal Art and Poetry Contest. Entries must be postmarked by Jan. 31 to be eligible.

Up to 10 winners will be selected to win $100 gift certificates to an art supply or book store, and each winner's sponsoring teacher will receive a $50 gift certificate for educational supplies, courtesy of Acorn Naturalists. All winners and honorable mentions will receive tickets for their families to visit the Aquarium of the Pacific, in Long Beach.
