Nielsen will be DN state senator

Republican candidate Jim Nielsen will be the new state senator for Del Norte County after easily outpolling his opponent in a special election Tuesday in Senate District 4.

Nielsen, of Gerber, received 66.6 percent of the vote compared to Democrat Michael "Mickey" Harrington's 33.4 percent, according to the California Secretary of State's website.

In Del Norte County, Nielsen received 63.1 percent of the vote to Harrington's 36.9 percent.

Harrington is from Magalia.

The runoff vote became necessary when Nielsen finished just under the 50 percent mark in a six-way special election in November.

Nielsen will fill a seat formerly held by Doug LaMalfa of Richvale. LaMalfa resigned to run successfully for Congress.

Nielsen's seat will be up for election again in 2014, but at that point Del Norte will become part of the 2nd state Senate District due to redistricting. That district is currently represented by Sen. Noreen Evans, D-Santa Rosa.
