Del Norte authorities were still working Wednesday to identify two people who died after their truck went off the side of a river access road near U.S. Highway 197 on Tuesday afternoon.
A 2001 Dodge pickup was traveling on the access road off the highway near mile-marker 0.65 around 4:15 p.m. when it went off the embankment toward the Smith River, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The truck flipped onto its roof and became engulfed in flames, the CHP said. The two occupants were dead at the scene.
A witness said she heard an explosion, CHP Sgt. Del Gray said.
The access road is near the junction of highways 197 and 199.
"It's not a commonly traveled road," said Gray, describing it as a narrow dirt road.
There have been no missing persons reported to the CHP office, Gray said.
