A search for a local man who was mushroom picking was suspended Friday after about 25 Del Norte Search and Rescue members and seven dogs spent several hours over the past couple of days on Cant Hook Mountain, where John Cunnison, 62, was last seen.
Cunnison, of Crescent City, and a friend were on French Hill Road about two miles off of South Fork Road at about 11 a.m. Tuesday when Cunnison left his friend to go down a hill and never came back, said Commander Bill Steven of the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office. Cunnison's friend waited for most of the day before reporting him missing at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Volunteers with Del Norte County Search and Rescue as well as search and rescue teams from Oregon started combing the steep brushy terrain Tuesday, battling rain on Wednesday, Steven said.
Volunteers with Del Norte County Search and Rescue as well as search and rescue teams from Oregon have been combing the steep brushy terrain since Tuesday, battling rain on Wednesday, Steven said. Search and Rescue have also deployed several dog teams and are continuing the search on Tuesday.
"We had an excellent starting point for where (Cunnison) had taken off into the forest," Steven said. "Search and Rescue have been very diligent and are working very hard."
Volunteers are searching an area roughly 15 miles up South Fork Road from U.S. Highway 199, Steven said. A command post has been set up at the intersection of South Fork Road and French Hill Road.
