A local man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of burglarizing the rental car of tourists from Minnesota.

Two tourists who had been walking the beach came back to the car parked on U.S. Highway 101 near Sandmine Road to find the passenger side window broken, items strewn on the ground beside it and a man rifling through their property inside of it around 9:40 a.m., said sheriff's Commander Tim Athey.

They confronted the man, later identified by authorities as 28-year-old Stanley Stevens, and he attempted to flee with a backpack, Athey said.

Stevens was tackled, but the tourists then backed off, unsure if he had a weapon, Athey said.

Sheriff's deputies respondedand found Stevens on the highway near Front Street, Athey said.

He was detained and the victims were brought to the location of arrest to positively identify him, Athey said.

Stevens was arrested on suspicion of two counts of burglary and two counts of attempted robbery.
