Yurok tribal members have approved a special referendum designed to distribute funds secured in the Nez Perce v. Salazar settlement to tribal members and to be used as an investment in the tribe's planned hotel and casino, the tribe announced Thursday.
The unofficial elections results were 1,016 voted in favor and 642 opposed, the tribe said in a press release, adding its Elections Committee will certify the results Monday.
The total Nez Perce settlement amount is $27.5 million.The referendum provides for a per capita distribution of$1,000 for tribal members under 18, $3,500 for those 18-59, and $4,500 for those 60 and older, as of Jan. 9, 2013.
The remaining funds will enable the tribe to finance and construct a hotel and casino in Klamath on the Yurok Reservation.
