Identities given after fiery crash

Authorities have released the identities of two people whose badly burned bodies were found after a one-vehicle accident in January on a road near state Highway 197.

Brookings residents Leon D. Jones, 48, and Forrest A. Nading, 54, died Jan. 15 after their truck rolled about 170 feet down an embankment, flipped onto its roof and caught fire, said California Highway Patrol Officer Brandy Gonzalez.

It appears that they unintentionally backed down the embankment, Gonzalez said.

There were no marks on the dirt roadway indicating an acceleration, she added.

The fire grew to such an intensity it left little for authorities to use to identify the bodies.

DNA tests had to be conducted in cooperation with the families of the assumed victims to confirm the indentities of the two men.
