Almost time to run the redwoods

Friday is early registration deadline for Redwood Wild River Run on March 23

Del Norte County is known worldwide for its breathtaking natural scenes.

For approximately 30 years, residents and out-of-towners have immersed themselves in the scenery by running or walking on the roads that deftly course throughout the landscape.

The 2013 iteration of the Redwood Wild River Run will occur on Saturday, March 23, at 11 a.m.

Runners and walkers will start and end their journey in Douglas Park, loping through the forested areas of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park along a gravel road punctuated by hills.

"The whole thing is along old-growth redwood," says Ralph Hirt, in his 27th year as the event's race director. "A great deal of it is run alongside Mill Creek. You have the trees and the water - just a great outdoor experience."

Interested runners or outdoor enthusiasts may participate in a 15-kilometer race or a 5-kilometer run or walk.

"The one thing we have seen over the years - this run started out as what I would call a very serious 15K run," Hirt says.

"The 5K was added as sort of a fun run thing for spouses, children and others. The 5K has grown to where it's way bigger than the 15K now. We have a lot of walkers come out and do it, and we encourage them."

Hirt says that walkers have taken an additional interest in the 15K route. Walkers are permitted to complete the course, but they must start at 10 a.m. in order to finish before the runners make their way through. The race will officially begin at 11 a.m.

Early registration costs $15 and must be postmarked by Friday. Registration after then is $20. There will be an additional $25 charge for a hooded sweat shirt with the event logo.
