If you're like me and just can't wait until June 1 when the Crescent City Farmers Market starts up, here's some good news. I'm delighted to report that just a few miles up the road in Brookings-Harbor the "Wednesday Farmer's Market at the Grange" is officially open for business.
I couldn't miss opening day last week. I was excited to walk in and find an assortment of late winter/early spring produce, eggs and honey as well as cottage industry craft items. Sellers and shoppers seemed upbeat and chatty as conversations and sales transactions intertwined.
A regular at the Crescent City Farmers Market, Brookings' Bakery by the Sea displayed fresh breads and sweet treats. Smith River's own Salsa Suzy was serving up hot tamales to shoppers who spent their lunch hour stocking up on fresh food.
The Chetco Grange Community Center, 97895 Shopping Center Ave. (corner of Highway 101 and Zimmerman), in Harbor, is the spot for this festive market that welcomes customers indoors now, but will grow to include an indoor-outdoor market when locally grown fruits and vegetables are more plentiful in the summer and fall.
Last week 15 vendors set up a nice variety of goods and their sales seemed brisk as I made my way from one to the other. The Triplicate's own food columnist Anne Boulley had a table featuring homemade gourmet marshmallows in strawberry and chocolate flavors, as well as her trademark Bavarian-style pretzels.
Market manager Linda Stimson, who brought fresh eggs, turnips, beets, carrots, greens and calla lilies, said she expects 22 vendors for future Wednesday indoor markets. "In mid-June we'll set up outdoors as well and have even more," she said. Stimson said that the Wednesday market is here to stay with plans to remain open year-round, every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
For more information about the market or to inquire about being a vendor, call Linda Stimson at 541-661-3860.
