Construction work is beginning on the U.S. Highway 101 bridge over the Klamath River, Caltrans announced Monday.
The project will replace three hinges on the G. H. Douglas Memorial Bridge in southern Del Norte to extend its service life. A hinge is a vital part of a bridge that allows it to expand and contract with changes in temperature, Caltrans said.
A temporary traffic signal will be installed today, and it will remain in place through late October, Caltrans said.
One-way traffic control will be in effect constantly, and motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays, Caltrans said.
The project will continue during the 2014 construction season, also from June to late October, and a temporary traffic signal will be in place then as well.
