A single-car accident killed two local womenFriday.
Del Norte resident Miranda L. Thompson, 21, was driving a 2005 Ford Mustang north on California Highway 197 near mile-marker 5.63 as she passed another northbound vehicle around2:50 p.m., the California Highway Patrol States.
The Mustang spun out of control after passing the vehicle, crossed into the southbound lane and went off the highway, striking a group of trees, the CHP states.
Thompson died at the scene and her passenger, 19-year-old Natasha Bates, of Klamath, was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The Smith River Volunteer Fire Department, Fort Dick Volunteer Fire Department, Calfire, U.S. Department of Forestry and Del Norte Ambulance also responded to the accident.
