The Crescent City Police Department is seeking a transient Crescent City man suspected of attacking another transient in the wooded area behind Safeway on July 4.

Kevin H. Kinman, 48, is alleged to have confronted a man and his girlfriend near the east end of 5th Street around 8 p.m., said police Sgt. Erik Apperson.

"Kevin attacked him, pulled out a blade knife with a yellow handle, opened it and started lunging at (the victim)," said Apperson.

The victim told his girlfriend to run and as he turned to run away from Kinman, "he got a slice on the back of his neck near the hairline," said Apperson.

Officers found the victim near Crescent City Cinemas and he was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital, treated and released.

Based on the interview with the victim and the attack, Kinman is being sought for attempted murder, Apperson said.

"Had that slice happened anywhere vital ... (the victim) would have bled out very fast," said Apperson.

Kinman is listed as standing at 5 feet 11 inches and weighing 175 pounds with short brown hair and hazel eyes. He also has tattoos covering both arms.

Kinman was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison in 2009 after he was convicted of possessing a stolen vehicle and evading a peace officer. Kinman had led local California Highway Patrol officers on a six-minute chase that ended when he drove the stolen vehicle into a pond outside of Pelican Bay State Prison in 2008.

Kinman has also served time for attempted murder, Apperson said.

Anyone who sees Kinman isadvised not to approach him, but to call authorities as soon as possible.
