BREAKING: Inmate escapes Pelican Bay

A Pelican Bay State Prison inmate walked away from the minimum-security facility area that borders Lake Earl Drive early Monday afternoon.

Pelican Bay correctional officers, Del Norte Sheriff's Office, California Highway Patrol and Crescent City Police Department began searching for inmate Tore Digirolamo shortly after his escape around 12:30 p.m, .

A helicopter was searching from overhead in the wooded area near the prison and armed officers and police canines searched on foot.

Digirolamo, 44, from Los Angeles County, is described as a white male, standing at 5 feet 9 inches and weighing 200 pounds. He has brown hair and eyes.

He is serving a four-year sentence for second-degree burglary, officials said. He began serving his term in July 2011.

If he is spotted it is advised to call 911.
