Yuroks’ $1 rides to, from Klamath

Starting Monday, the Yurok Tribe will offer a Dial-A-Ride service in the Klamath area, including the long haul between Klamath and Crescent City, for only $1 a ride for all Del Norters.

The Yurok Tribal Transit Service will provide a new transportation option for both tribal and non-tribal residents in and around Klamath using an eight-passenger, 4x4 van, equipped with a hydraulic wheelchair lift.

"We are pleased to offer and expand our efforts to improve transportation to the community of Klamath," said the Yurok Tribe's vice-chair, Susan Masten, in a press release.

The ride service, which will be offered Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is the result of the tribe's successful acquisition of more than $400,000 in grant funding from the Federal Transit Authority's Tribal Transit program, which distributed more than $30 million to dozens of tribes in the last three years to enhance local public transit service on tribal lands.

"The new transit services are the direct result of the Yurok Tribe's innovative approach to work cooperatively with community partners and funding agencies. The Yurok Tribe continues to provide a multi-faceted approach for the Klamath community's growing transportation needs," said Joseph James, Yurok transportation manager, in the release.

"We look forward to continuing to work for partnerships and the ability to offer more transportation infrastructure improvements and transit services to all who use and depend on it," said Peggy O'Neill, the director Tribe's Planning and Community Development Department.

For the Dial-A-Ride service, call the Yurok Tribal Transit Service at (707) 482-0731, for more information about location and pick up times. The one-way fare is $1 for all riders.
