Garden gates open Sunday for Habitat for Humanity fundraiser

Looking for some inspiration? Take the annual Del Norte Habitat for Humanity Garden Tour on Sunday at seven residences, mostly in the Hiouchi area.

Each year the organization hosts a tour of some of this area's finest gardens, and Sunday's event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tour-goers can enjoy refreshments while admiring the beautiful surroundings.

The locations, four of which are on Cable Lane, include the homes of:

andbull; Leona and Alan Koenig, 165 Cable Lane

andbull; Ruth and Chris York, 185 Cable Lane

andbull; Shirley and Bud Porteous, 155 Cable Lane

andbull; Grant Werschkull and Patty McCleary, 145 Cable Lane

andbull; Mimi and Bob Stephens, 145 Cable Rock Road

andbull; Toni and John Jaeger, 221 Christensen Way

andbull; Fagerskog/Grady, 145 Tawnee Way

"People love the garden tour," said Chris Owen, a member of the local Habitat board.

Other attractions at the various locations include pottery by Linda Yuvan; Rande Rothman displaying mosaics by her and her students; oil painter Laura Wiens painting garden scenes; recycled metal garden art by Old Soul Studios; tole-painted garden signs by Mary Jo Duncan; home and garden signs by Susan Taylor; Amber Wier's glass vases; Tina Csuturas' pottery; ceramics by Chris Titus; and Rosie's Backyard native plants.

Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased at any of the garden locations, or in Crescent City in advance at Johnston's Gift, Garden and Home or Del Norte Office Supply.

Enter a free raffle drawing at the Stephens' home for a chance to win a wide variety of prizes. The drawing will be held at 3:30 p.m. and you need not be present to win.

"This is going to help us raise funds for houses we're building," said Owen.

The organization is currently finishing up a Smith River home for Israel and Eustolia Luna and their extended family. The Luna family has been a big part of the project, exceeding the normal amount of "sweat equity" required for beneficiaries, according to a Habitat newsletter.
