Beetles, buses, beach cleanup

A group of vintage Volkswagen and surfing enthusiasts stopped in Crescent City to help clean South Beach on Tuesday morning.

The group is part of the Airhead Parts Border to Border VW Cruise that is taking a tour down the west coast from the Canadian to the Mexican borders while stopping along the way to help clean up beaches.

A core group of volunteers in 20 VWs ranging from Beetles to buses are making the whole trek while others are joining the group and traveling partway.

"It's all about keeping our beaches clean and oceans healthy," said Scott Dempster, the tour's coordinator.

The cruise is sponsored by the Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization started by surfers from Malibu in 1984 dedicated to protecting and enjoying the world's oceans and beaches.

It now has over 50,000 members and 90 chapters worldwide.

VW of America is another sponsor; it donated a chase car to document the event.

The crew cleaned about 120 pounds of trash - mostly carpeting - from South Beach Tuesday morning, said Dave Cormack, a local VW enthusiast who owns a 1957 Sunroof Beetle.

"I'm glad to see someone help clean up South Beach," said Cormack.

Before the cleanup, the crew ate at Fisherman's Restaurant, which donated the trashbags.

Recology Del Norte picked up the trash at no cost.

The crew landed in Humboldt later in the day on Tuesday, scuttled down to San Francisco Wednesday and will be at the Monterey Bay Aquarium today.

They still have about 30 stops until the tour ends in San Diego for a final group photo next Tuesday.
