The Del Norte region has a varied and active nonprofit arts community, including a community theater group, community concert association, community orchestra, an arts guild/gallery, quilt guild, artisans guild, mural society, writers' conference and a local arts agency. Now, adding to this impressive array, it will have a music guild which acts as the umbrella for a handful of local musical entities.

The Pacific Music Guild is the brainchild of Christie Lynn Rust, who has been directing the community choir for more than four years, with piano accompaniment by Jill Dovre.

"This will be a way to encourage and present live performing music involving local folks," said Rust. Thus far, she continued, "we have the chorale and Tsunami Swing (community jazz band) signed up, and in September the Crescent City Youth Choir is starting up. And there may be more eventually, possibly a kinder choir for ages 5 to 7 years."

The guild has a board of eight community members and has completed and sent in its 501(c)(3) paperwork to the Internal Revenue Service. It has already received a nonprofit designation from the state of California.

The North Coast Chorale begins its fall session of rehearsalsat 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, in the United Methodist Church, 664 H Street in Crescent City. This non-auditioned choir is open to anyone wanting to participate; it is a chance to have fun while singing with others, receive basic coaching in sight reading music, and getting to know new people from many walks of life. Rehearsals from 7 to 9:30 p.m. will continue each Wednesday through the concert on Dec. 11. For more information, contact Rust at 218-6769

The Crescent City Children's Choir, a non-auditioned group for kids ages 9 to 12 years old who like to sing, starts up at 6 p.m. on Sept. 9, also at the United Methodist Church. Rehearsals continue from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays until the public performance on Dec. 11. The choir director is Greg Goode, and accompaniment is provided by pianist Angela Harmon-Zucco.
