School Board to review staffing and temporary coaching policy

Klamath River Early College of the Redwoods on Thursday will update the Del Norte County Unified School District Board on its enrollment for the upcoming school year.

In June, the Board tasked KRECR with recruiting at least 119 students or raise $100,000 by the end of August in order to open for the 2013andndash;14 school year. According to EdTec, which has been providing bookkeeping services to KRECR since February, with 119 students the charter school could break even with no funds set aside for a reserve.

In its report to the Board of Education, KRECR Director Bernadette Johnson and Brandon Paige, EdTec's client manager, reported an ending fund deficit of $253,000. KRECR's outstanding bills total $60,000, some of which stem from early November, according to Paige.

But the school's projected balance for the end of the 2013andndash;14 fiscal year is $37,000, Johnson said. That projection is based on an enrollment of 125 students, she said.

The charter school's cash flow balance for May

was positive and was expected to be positive for June, according to Paige. Scholarship checks had been sent to students and the school was projected to meet its payroll obligations, he said in June.

KRECR has been fighting a budget deficit since December, when the school mistakenly used restricted scholarship funds to close a deficit in its unrestricted fund balance, creating a $168,000 deficit.

Since then, KRECR has closed its Klamath campus, laid off staff members and cut its employees' pay by 5 percent. The KRECR Board also voted in February to discontinue health care benefits for its employees for the rest of the 2012andndash;13 school year.

In other matters, the School Board, which also serves as the Del Norte County Unified School District Board of Trustees, will discuss staffing levels for the Nutrition Services Department and will review the current CSBA policy for temporary athletic coaches.

The County Board of Education, which serves as the Del Norte County Unified School District Board of Trustees, meets at 4:30 p.m. in the Education Center Building at the district offices, 301 W. Washington Blvd., in Crescent City.
