Driver rescued after truck goes off road, into river

A vehicle went off the embankment of Requa Road around 1 p.m. Wednesday, becoming partially submerged in the Klamath River and requiring medical attention for one person, officials said.

Two of the occupants of the 1999 GMC Sierra fled after the vehicle went off the road, but the third occupant, Leland Oscar, 46, of Crescent City, was trapped in the truck and momentarily submerged underwater, causing him to go in and out of consciousness, according to the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office.

A Del Norte Search and Rescue Team with a patrol boat was dispatched to the scene, but turned around after Oscar was stabilized, officials said.

Oscar was transported by ambulance to Sutter Coast Hospital, according to the California Highway Patrol, and was discharged Friday.

Cal Fire also assisted at the scene.
